Lille Regional Teaching University Hospital—a leading provider of healthcare in northern France—wanted to provide a better experience for patients and improve staff workflow. To meet its goals, the hospital replaced stand-alone TVs in each room with a Microsoft technology–based solution that includes Care and Comfort bedside terminals running Windows Embedded, Windows Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SharePoint Server, and in the future, Skype.

A leading regional healthcare and training center, Lille CHRU has 3,000 beds and 15,000 employees, and provides in-patient services to more than 87,000 people each year. To offer more personalized services and a better in-room experience, the hospital wanted a centralized interface that would connect media services, communications tools, and patient records.

As in most hospitals, patient rooms at Lille CHRU were equipped with a conventional setup—a phone and a television—that had worked well for years. However, the hospital wanted something different for its next upgrade. As a regional university hospital, Lille CHRU serves patients who often travel a considerable distance for healthcare. Travel time could make staying in touch with loved ones difficult, and hospital administrators knew that feeling connected was an important part of the recovery process. “We were very interested in providing

Since 2011, via a partnership with Lille hospital, Clubster Santé, (a network of health-sector businesses based in the North of France) have been pooling their expertise to develop the patient room of the future: the ‘’Concept Room’’

The room, which has been successfully rolled out at a number of hospitals in France and Belgium, features a 3-in-1 hospital bed (sofa-bed – stretcher – operating table) designed for same-day surgery and a range of digital communicating equipment for remotely monitoring the patient’s vital signs. Ten of the member companies of Clubster Santé recently grouped together to form a joint-stock company called Clinifit which will develop and market the innovative hospital room concept, as well as developing an all-inclusive leasing model for it, to ensure optimal profitability.

The patient room of the future

The ‘Concept Room’, a prototype for an innovative ambulatory surgery centre designed by Clubster Santé and Lille university hospital, offers a glimpse into the future of patient care. This project, which was presented at the last ‘Health and autonomy’ expo and sponsored by Econocom, won an HIT innovation trophy in 2013.

In 2009, a team of American designers developed a prototype called Patient Room 2020, which combines state-of-the-art architecture with cutting-edge technology, featuring sensors, monitors and touch screens to manage medical data and enable patients to keep in touch with the outside world […]

LILLE REGION: TOMORROW’S HEALTHCARE TODAY

Having unveiled the hospital room of the future in 2012, Lille’s University Hospital Center (CHRU) and Clubster Santé, a Lille Region health industry network, are now designing tomorrow’s outpatient surgery center. Their goal: create an optimal outpatient structure that promotes patient wellbeing and simplifies the work of care providers.

NEW FOCUS ON OUTPATIENT SURGERY

Today’s hospitals are trending sharply towards outpatient treatment: in the US and UK, 80% of surgical treatment is performed on an outpatient basis, and France aims to raise its proportion of outpatient procedures from 36% today to 50% by 2016. That’s why CHRU and Clubster Santé have moved on to phase two of the Concept Room project, inspired by the automobile industry’s concept cars. Building on Concept Room Opus 1, a futuristic hospital room unveiled in 2012, Concept Room Opus 2 showcases tomorrow’s outpatient surgery center, designed around the core principles of progress and patient autonomy.

According to the World Health Organization, France has the top-rated healthcare system in the world. Part of this can be attributed to our belief that all citizens should have access to quality medical care, but also the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and economic development in the healthcare system via agencies such asEurasante.

Two companies pushing the innovation envelope in the area of patient care are Groupe Scotler and Econocom. They joined forces to address the need to provide doctors and nurses with easy access to patient medical information, as well as improve the comfort of patients during their hospital stay. Scotler brought its expertise building customized software and hardware solutions; Econocom contributed its years of working as a system integrator and solution provider. The result is Care and Comfort.
